Victim In Near-Drowning Arrested

The victim of a near-drowning incident that occurred in the Five Points area Wednesday was arrested shortly after being checked by medical personnel.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that the incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. at a creek off of Appleton Road.

Three witnesses reported that their group of four had been swimming and that Bobby Glyn Smith, age 45, of 507 Stephens Street, Lawrenceburg, had been consuming alcohol. They reported that Smith went into the water and that after a few moments he went under and did not resurface.

A male witness reported that he pulled Smith from the water, but that he had a bluish color and was not breathing. The man performed CPR, successfully reviving him.

Deputies placed Smith into the bed of a truck in order to transport him from the remote location to a waiting ambulance. Reports show that Smith repeatedly stated that he was okay.

Medical personnel assessing his condition determined that Smith suffered no obvious ill effects. At his request he was released.

Deputies determined that Smith, “was creating a danger to himself,” due to his intoxicated state. As a result, Smith was arrested on a charge of public intoxication and incarcerated at the Lawrence County Detention Center.

He will answer the charge through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on August 13, 2013.
