Community Clubs Wrap Up Anti-Litter Campaign

Nearly 34,000 pounds of litter was collected by Lawrence County community clubs and their supporters between February and June, during the first county-wide litter pickup effort of 2008.

Community clubs and their supporters collected litter between February 1 and June 1 as part of a contest funded by the Litter Grant Program of the Tennessee Department of Transportation. The effort coincided with the Great American Cleanup campaign, held each spring.

During the four month period, community clubs and their backers delivered 33,879 pounds of litter to the Lawrence County Solid Waste Transfer Station. Several other organizations took part in the campaign as well, contributing more than two additional tons.

West End Community Club collected 10,060 pounds of litter, winning the first place prize of $250.  Copperas Branch Community Club won second place and $200 by collecting 7,934 pounds of litter.  West Point Community Club collected 4,840 pounds of litter, winning the third place prize of $150. Winning fourth place and $100 was Gandy Community Club, whose supporters collected 3,420 pounds of litter.

Southeast, Henryville, New Prospect, Mars Hill and Leoma clubs will all receive $50 cash awards for participating in the litter cleanup campaign. Also participating in the cleanup effort were Iron City, E.O. Coffman Middle School and the Antioch Youth Group, with a combined total of 5,020 pounds of litter.

Lawrence County Government thanks all those who participated in the latest litter campaign for helping Keep Lawrence County Clean.  A second community club litter pickup contest will be held in the fall. Community clubs and their supporters are encouraged to watch for dates about that event.
