Lawrence Woman Targeted In Identity Theft Scheme

   Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies met with a Baker Lane resident Tuesday to initiate an investigation into an instance of identity theft.

   The fifty-year-old victim told deputies that she had been contacted by officials with Suntrust Bank, regarding suspicious activity on her credit card.

   Bank officials told the victim that a “red flag” was raised when someone at Wachovia Bank had attempted to transfer funds from her credit card account, into another account. The victim reported that someone had attempted to transfer some $11,000 from her account.

   Bank officials discovered that the perpetrator used the victim’s credit card number, social security number and date of birth, but that the individual had used a different name. Suntrust officials were able to stop the transfer, then canceled the victim’s card.

   The victim told deputies that she had not lost her credit card, indicating that she had no idea how the perpetrator came by her information.
