Twelve Million More Needed To Finish Jail And Courthouse Projects

  County officials estimate they will need to borrow in excess of twelve million dollars in order to complete current jail and courthouse annex projects.

  Members of the Lawrence County Commission indicate they will likely call a special session in August in order to approve a bond resolution to fund the remainder of the projects.

  Projects currently underway through the county include:  renovation of the solid waste transfer building into a temporary jail, with cost estimated to total $704,000; construction of a new jail, with total cost projected atCounty Projected $15.3 million; and the purchase and renovation of a courthouse annex, estimated to cost $3 million. In addition, the county has already spent some $916,000 on the renovation of the existing Lawrence County Jail. The total for all four projects is $19,920,000.

  Officials project that it will cost the county $17.6 million in order to complete all of the projects. With bond issuance funds of $5.5 million currently available, county leaders will need to borrow an additional $12.1 million in order to complete all of the projects.
