Vending Machine Thieves Lose Load

Thieves lost their load when residents intervened in a reported vending machine theft Friday night.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies report they were summoned to SuperRama, 4955 Highway 43 North, Summertown, around 11:30 Friday night by a neighbor. Dispatchers with Lawrence Central Dispatch advised them that the woman had noticed a thief loading cola vending machines into a truck outside the business.

When they arrived, deputies reported finding one vending machine lying in the highway and a second lying in the parking lot. Both had sustained heavy damages.

When they spoke with the neighbor she stated that she had looked toward the business earlier and noticed the man was loading the machines into the bed of his truck. She stated that she placed a call to her boyfriend and that he and his friend had hastened to the scene from the nearby Quik Mart.

The men reported that the man was still in the parking lot when they arrived. They reported they used their truck to block the exit in an attempt to prevent the thief from leaving. Instead, they report he drove through a ditch and grassy area in order to exit the parking lot. In the process, they report one vending machine toppled onto the parking lot, the second onto the highway.

Damages as a result of the crime are estimated to total $3,000. The matter remains under investigation at the present time.
