Child Recuperating After Being Bitten By Snake At Crockett Park

A young girl is recuperating after having been bitten by a snake while camping at David Crockett State Park during the weekend.

According to park officials, the five-year-old resident of Mount Pleasant was camping at Campground #2 when the incident occurred.

The girl was bitten on the top of the foot by a copperhead. Family members quickly notified the Camp Host, who immediately contacted Ranger Wes Huckaba.

Huckaba, in turn, summoned members of the Lawrence County Ambulance Service to the scene and initiated a snake hunt. The culprit snake was quickly captured, then dispatched for testing.

“The EMS team gave a really good response,” said Huckaba. Medical personnel gave initial treatment before transporting the child to Crockett Hospital. She was then flow by Air Evac to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville for more extensive treatment.

Vanderbilt, officials explained, is best equipped to treat snake bites. There was also some concern regarding the child’s young age. At last word, however, the girl was responding well to treatment.
