Neighbor Admits Stealing Check From Mailbox

In the wake of a police investigation Saturday, officials indicate that a neighbor admitted she had stolen a check from a mailbox and attempted to cash it at a local market.

The 79-year-old victim, a resident of High Avenue, reported the incident through Lawrenceburg Police Department. He indicated that he had been contacted by a clerk at Buffalo Road Market, who stated a woman had attempted to cash a check made out to him for the amount of $275. The clerk had obtained the woman’s name from her identification, and the victim reported that she was a neighbor.

When officers confronted the woman about the incident, they report she first denied taking the check, but later confessed to the crime. She allegedly told officers that she had noticed the mail had been delivered that morning, and went to check her mailbox. She indicated that she looked into her neighbor’s mailbox and took the check. She stated that she then went to the market and attempted to cash it.

Officers report that the woman handed over the check stub and envelop, which she had ripped into pieces.

The victim reported to officers that this was the second time a check had been stolen from his mailbox. The first, he indicated, was for $500.

At the time reports were filed, no charges had yet been placed against the suspect.
