Annual Kiwanis Club BBQ Cookoff To Begin Friday

The annual Tennessee State BBQ Cook-Off Championship, and the 2007 Amateur Tailgate Cook-Off, held by the Lawrenceburg Kiwanis Club, is slated to get underway Friday and will continue throughout the day Saturday.

The event, which is open to the public free of charge, has reached its highest level, with the maximum 56 professional barbecue teams. With an estimated 30 backyard (or amateur) teams, Event Coordinator Carl Counce points out, “This is a record breaking year. It is the most teams we have ever had, making it one of, if not the largest event in the State of Tennessee.”

The local event allows top professional teams throughout the region to compete for the officially sanctioned Kansas City Barbecue Society State Championship. On the local level, teams compete for cash and prizes valued at more than $18,000. The event is sponsored by the Lawrenceburg Kiwanis Club, AT&T, and a number of local businesses.

If you are not a professional cook but like the idea of joining in the competition, several contests are planned for amateur outdoor chefs. A Children’s Hotdog Championship will be held from 8:00 until 11:00 Saturday. The Backyard Cook’s Anything Goes competition is slated for 8:00 p.m. Friday, and the Amateur Tailgate Cook-off will be held Friday, as well.

Free entertainment will be available, and vendors will be on-site. For additional information you may call 762-3399.
