Ethridge Resident Is Target Of Identity Theft

A resident of the Ethridge area reported to local law enforcement agents on Friday that someone had apparently assumed her identity, obtaining a job in the Franklin area and earning wages on which she has not paid income taxes.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were summoned to the victim’s 405 New Horizon Circle home around 10:34 a.m. She indicated that a Hispanic woman in her mid 40s has been using her former name and Social Security Number since April 18 in order to maintain a job at Embassy Suites. The name the woman was using was the victim’s maiden name, which she has not used since 2005.

The victim stated she became aware of the situation after receiving a notice through the mail from the Internal Revenue Service. The paperwork indicated that she owed some $2,108.00 on her 2008 income taxes. Further investigation on her part lead to the discovery that her identity had been commandeered by the Franklin woman.

The matter has been turned over for more intense investigation by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
