Arrest Made In Early Monday Vehicle Burglary Spree

One local man was arrested in connection with an early morning burglary spree Monday that involved a number of vehicles.

According to reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department Benjamin Taylor Barnett, 21, was arrested at his Baker Lane home in connection with the burglaries.

Officers report that at around 1:00 a.m. they received information about multiple vehicle burglaries that had occurred in the preceding hours. Callers reported that the suspects’ vehicle was parked near the Eighth Street/Springer Road intersection.

The reporting officer indicates that he parked his car and exited, then concealed himself near the suspect car. He reports that Barnett later approached and got into the vehicle.

While the officer was identifying himself and ordering him out of the car he says Barnett started the vehicle. He said that when he heard the officer’s instructions, “He sped up and came near me with the car as he fled the scene.” The driver reportedly fled north on Springer Road traveling at a high rate of speed.

Later, officers located Barnett’s car at his Baker Lane address. He answered the door and was placed under arrest. Once he had been read his rights officers report that he admitted he had been driving the car, and that he and a friend had committed the crimes. He then showed officers the locations of each vehicle burglary.

Barnett was transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center where he was booked under charges of evading arrest and reckless endangerment. He was scheduled an initial appearance in General Sessions Court on September 4, 2014.

Officers note that multiple reports are associated with this incident and additional charges are likely to be forthcoming.
