Young Hensley Still Recuperating

Thursday the daughter of 70th District State Representative Dr. Joey Hensley was continuing to recuperate in a Nashville hospital from injuries she sustained Tuesday when struck by a vehicle.

Hohenwald Police Officer Robert Taylor reported that Jenna Hensley, 8, was struck after stepping into the path of the 2005 Chevrolet truck driven by Tracy Odom.

The young Hensley had gone to retrieve mail from the family’s mailbox outside their 855 Summertown Highway, Hohenwald, home around 10:20 a.m. She was impacted by the passenger side bumper, sustaining multiple fractures and internal injuries.

According to Taylor, Odom was not at fault in the accident and no charges will be forthcoming.

Jenna Hensley was airlifted to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville where she underwent surgery Wednesday.

Doctors worked to repair Hensley’s leg by inserting two metal rods along her femur and two along her tibia and fibula. Mother Gina reported her daughter had also sustained lacerations to the liver, spleen and kidney as well as injury to her neck.

Jenna’s neck ligaments were injured, making it difficult for her to hold her head erect. In addition, doctors feared that she might have sustained a neck fracture.

Gina Hensley indicated that doctors planned to place the child in a body cast, then reevaluate the condition of her neck in six weeks. Should the problem persist, they may be forced to fuse her neck bones.

Doctors were running a head MRI on Thursday to check for various other injuries.
