Deputies Investigate Church Vandalism, Theft

The vandalism of a local church as well as a theft from the premises is the subject of an investigation undertaken Wednesday through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department.

According to reports filed by deputies with the department, units were dispatched around 4:00 p.m. Wednesday to Mt. Zion Church of Christ located at 210 Mt. Zion Road in the Five Points area.

Deputies were summoned to the scene by Mt. Pleasant resident Thomas Clinton Tankersley. He indicated he had come to the property and discovered that someone had thrown a beer bottle through a window on the storm door, breaking it.

While Checking about, Tankersley discovered that a row of fence posts that had been erected by church members to help keep individuals off of adjoining property, were nowhere to be found. It appeared the T-posts had been pulled up and stolen. Tankersley estimated that there were twenty, six-foot posts missing.

Total loss and damages were estimated at $125.00. Investigation into the matter is continuing by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone who has information pertinent to the investigation is urged to contact them at 762-3626.
