Large Seizure Of Drugs, Guns And Money

Friday, May 20th, agents with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department responded to the Lawrence County Jail after a Sergeant in the corrections division had received $4,000.00 for a cash bond on John Colt Ashley, who was incarcerated for drug related charges.

The Sergeant was familiar with the smell of marijuana and associated the smell with the money that had been given to him by Johnny Ashley, John Colt Ashley’s Father.

Drug Agents responded and talked with Johnny Ashley and his wife Peggy Ashley. After both subjects were Mirandized, Agents were able to obtain that the Ashleys had gotten the money from a safe located at their residence in Summertown.

They stated to agents the reason the money had the odor of marijuana on it was because it had been stored in a safe with approximately one quarter pound of marijuana.

Agents were able to obtain consent to search the residence including all locked and unlocked containers and all vehicles.

Upon arriving at 1131 North Brace Road in Summertown, agents searched the safe and retrieved over 4 ounces of marijuana, 26 hallucinogenic mushrooms, 12 hits of LSD, .1 gram of cocaine, and $944.00 in US currency.

A further search of the residence yielded around 4 ounces of hydroponic marijuana, 3 ½ Xanax, 1 morphine, 1 oxycontin, numerous items of drug paraphernalia including scales, a scanner, 17 handguns, and 21 long guns including assault rifles of high calibers and shotguns.

A total of $5,044.00 in US currency was seized and is believed to be proceeds of drug transactions. The firearms were taken into evidence because some of the guns are possibly illegal due to the measurements of the barrels.

The firearms remain under investigation. Charges in this case will be presented to the Grand Jury on a later date.
