Lawrence County Salute To Agriculture Week

The Lawrence County Salute to Agriculture Week is set for June 1st – June 7th and this year the theme is “Soil Conservation”.

The week will be kicked off with our “Lawrence County Salute to Agriculture” Newspaper Circular that you will find in the Sunday edition of the Lawrence County Advocate.

The circular will have lots of good informative articles, schedule of events and supporters and sponsors of “Salute to Agriculture Week” . On Monday, June 2nd the UDSA Service Center, located at 237 Waterloo Street will host an Open House.

This would be an awesome opportunity to drop by and learn more about the Farm Service Agency, Natural Resource and Conservation Service and Rural Development Offices and what type of programs they offer Lawrence County Farmers and Landowners. Also on Monday there will be an FCE sponsored “Cultural Arts Fair” from noon til 4pm. at the Lawrence County Extension Office Community Meeting Room.

On Tuesday the Lawrence County Chamber of Commerce, the Salute to Ag. Week Committee and various business and agencies will host a breakfast to honor Lawrence County Farmers. The breakfast is scheduled to begin at 7:30 am at the David Crockett Elementary School Cafeteria.

NRCS State Conservationist, Kevin Brown will be the keynote speaker and a Lawrence County Century Farm will be recognized. Farm City Day will be on Wednesday, June 5th from 9am. til noon at the Livestock Pavilion in Rotary Park. Farm City Day is planned to provide the youth of Lawrence County with hands-on opportunities to learn more about where their food comes from with lots of farm animals and other agriculture related educational and fun activities.

On Thursday, June 6th there will be a series of Farm Tours to highlight our 2014 theme of Soil Conservation.

We will see 4 different Lawrence County Farms with guest speakers all along the way. Poultry, Nutrient Management, Composting, Soil Health, Cover Crops, Rain Simulator, Wetland Restoration, Beef Cattle, Forages and Rotational Grazing are just a few of the things we will be seeing and hearing about on our Farm Tours.

The tour bus will depart from the David Crockett School Parking Lot at 7:45 am. and return at 2 pm. Refreshments and a NRCS sponsored lunch will be a part of the tour.

The Lawrence County Lions Club Walking Horse Show will be Friday’s Main Event. The Horse Show begins at 6 pm at Rotary Park. The week will conclude on Saturday, June 7th with a free day of fishing and Fishing Rodeos.
