Deputies Called Upon To Investigate Animal Neglect/Cruelty Case

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were called upon Friday to launch an investigation into the possibility that horses on a Loretto farm are starving to death.

According to sheriff’s department reports, the concerned citizens reported the incident just after noon, indicating that she had purchased a horse from the owner several months prior. Her horse, she reported, is healthy and happy. The same could not be said about the remainder of the herd.

The woman showed deputies photos of other horses, housed at the same farm. The horses had ribs showing and bones protruding and appeared to be undernourished.

Since she purchased her horse from the owner, the woman reported, one of the horses in the herd has died. The rest, she said, appear to be in poor condition. Four of the horses, she reported, are “starved almost to death.”

Deputies generated a report and have made contact with Lawrence County Agricultural Extension Agency Director Calvin Bryant, seeking further direction in the matter.
