State Issues Waiver On School Flood Makeup Days

Lawrence County Director of Schools Dr. Bill Heath indicates that local students have been given the thumbs-up, allowing them to do away with the makeup of two days recently missed due to heavy rains and flooding.

Lawrence County did not escape damage when widespread flooding hit the area on May 1 and 2, washing out an extremely high number of driveway and road culverts and rendering many area roadways impassable. As a result of the damage, local schools were closed for two days while members of the Lawrence County Highway Department scurried to repair the damaged roadways.

According to Heath, the local school system has received a waiver from State of Tennessee Education officials, allowing that the county’s school calendar remain intact throughout the end of the current school year. Schools will remain in regular session, with the last day before schools dismiss for summer break being Tuesday, May 25, 2010.
