Burglars Target Volunteer Fire Department

A member of Southeast Volunteer Fire Department notified law enforcement officials in past days that the fire department and community club building had been targeted by thieves.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the fire house, located at 6 Gillespie Lane in Five Points, around 8:15 p.m. Sunday.

Fireman Richard Freeman reported he had noticed on April 21 that someone had entered the locked front door of the building. Following the monthly business meeting on April 25, Freeman said he conducted a walk-through of the structure and discovered items were missing from the fire department area.

A Stihl brand chainsaw was reported stolen along with an orange saw case and a five gallon container filled with gasoline. Altogether, losses were estimated at $426.93.

Although there were no visible signs of forced entry, deputies noted that one door could have easily been accessed through use of a credit card, etc.

The matter remains under investigation at the present time by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division. Anyone who has information pertinent to the investigation is encouraged to contact the department at 762-3626.
