Man Charged For Assault Involving Daughter

An Iron City man was arrested on domestic assault charges over the weekend after he allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and his mother, who were attempting to flee with his young daughter.

Derrick Bronson Balentine of 67 West First Street, Iron City, was placed under arrest in the wake of the incident, on charges that include child abuse, vandalism, and two counts of domestic assault.

The primary victim, age thirty-one, reported that Balentine had come home drunk and attempted to leave with their daughter, age 2. She told Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies that she attempted to retrieve her daughter from him, but that he began to fight her off, threw her to the ground, and struck her.

The victim reported that she continued to fight with Balentine until she was able to get her daughter away from him. When she attempted to place a 911 call for assistance, she told deputies he grabbed the telephone and threw it to the ground, breaking it.

When his mother, age forty-eight, attempted to leave with the youngster, reports show that Balentine began pushing her and striking her car. She told deputies she was eventually able to get away. Deputies arrived a brief time later.

Balentine was booked on the charges through the Lawrence County Jail. He is scheduled to answer the charges through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 12, 2008.
