Suspect Attempts To Swallow Crack Cocaine

Officials with the Lawrenceburg Police Department indicate that a suspect attempted to “swallow the evidence” Wednesday when he was found to be in possession of drugs while being served with other drug indictments.

The incident occurred when Lawrenceburg Police Officers were attempting to serve outstanding indictments against Lawrenceburg resident William Jeffrey Polk.

According to Chief Neil Skinner, the indictments had been obtained in the wake of a previous drug investigation during which Polk allegedly sold crack cocaine. Officers spotted Polk driving along Sixth Street Wednesday and initiated a traffic stop in order to serve the indictments.

While they were placing Polk under arrest, officers report that he appeared to be concealing something inside his mouth. They indicate that he refused to comply when ordered to open his mouth, then began “chewing and swallowing something.” They report that when they restrained him, Polk began to spit a rock-like substance, believed to be crack cocaine, onto the hood of his truck.

The substance was seized into evidence, along what officers described as a “crack pipe” and a large rock of crack cocaine that had been concealed in his pocket.

Polk was transported without further incident to the Lawrence County Jail where he was booked under charges that include possession of crack cocaine for the purpose of resale, possession of drug paraphernalia, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest, and the original indictments, two counts of sale of crack cocaine.

At press time, Polk continued to be incarcerated under bonds of $80,000 issued through Lawrence County General Sessions Court and $20,000 issued through Lawrence County Circuit Court.

Polk is scheduled to answer his general sessions court charges on May 2, 2008.
