Resident Arrested For Hit And Run, Vandalism

A Lawrenceburg woman who allegedly broke into a garage and vandalized vehicles, then became involved in a hit and run collision, was taken into custody by local law enforcement officers Saturday afternoon.

The victim, Timothy Joe Henson, 45, of Lawrenceburg, summoned Lawrenceburg Police Officers to his garage on Mahr Avenue around 4:11 p.m. He reported that he had arrived to find the door shut but the lock lying on the ground. When he exited his vehicle, he indicated he heard a “loud banging inside.”

When he entered the garage Henson said he found a woman striking his restored 1969 Pontiac Lemans with a hatchet. The gas tank of his 1993 Harley Davidson Sportster was also damaged. He reported that the woman told him “she knew who he was and he was going to pay.” She then reportedly fled from the scene in a green, four-door Chevrolet car, possibly a Cavalier.

Henson told officers he did not know who the woman was, but that he had seen her walking around town periodically, and knew that she resided on Torges Street. At this point a Be On the Look Out (BOLO) alert was issued for the woman and her vehicle.

Officers made their way to Torges Street and learned from neighbors that a woman did reside there who drove a green, four-door Chevrolet Cavalier. They were able to provide officers with the woman’s name.

At 4:51 p.m., the investigating officer was notified that the BOLO vehicle had become involved in a hit and run collision in the 500 block of South Locust Avenue. The second driver there reported the woman had crashed into the right side of her vehicle, then left the scene.

Officers report they returned to the home of the suspect at 302 Torges Street and found that the green Cavalier in the driveway had sustained damage to the driver’s side. They spoke with resident Jackie Lynn Garland, age 40, and report that she smelled strongly of gasoline and that her body bore red paint chips that matched that of the damaged Lemans.

Garland was subsequently placed under arrest on numerous charges and transported to the Lawrence County Jail. Charges included the crimes of burglary, vandalism over $3,000, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to report an accident, and violation of the financial responsibility law.

Garland is scheduled for an initial appearance through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on Thursday, May 7, 2009.
