Vote On Lawrenceburg Police Chief Tabled

Although members of the Lawrenceburg Board of Mayor and Commissioners had been expected to hold a vote regarding the hiring of a new police chief Thursday, they instead tabled the matter.

Under the city’s charter, the city administrator is tasked with recommending a candidate for police chief. The measure must then garner the approval of the Board of Mayor and Commissioners.

Lawrenceburg City Administrator William McLain has been working to narrow the field of candidates for the position, left vacant with the early retirement of former Police Chief Terry Shay. Since Shay’s retirement, Assistant Chief Neal Skinner has served as Interim Police Chief. Skinner requested that he not be considered to fill the Chief’s position, due to the fact that he plans to retire in July.

During a recent work session McLain recommended the board hire Captain Anthony Nugent to fill the post. Nugent is a long-time employee of the Lawrenceburg Police Department, and McLain explained that he feels Nugent is knowledgeable and has a vision for the department.

Members of the commission held an interview with Nugent prior to Thursday morning’s business meeting. During the meeting Mayor Keith Durham made a motion to table the police chief issue until the commission’s April 24 meeting. He stated his desire to, “Bring in other candidates for interview.” He said that he felt it would be prudent for the board to “broaden its scope to make sure we are making the right decision for the city.”

The commission will meet for a work session at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, April 17, at which time they are expected to hold additional interviews.
