Inmate Dies While In Custody

An Ethridge man incarcerated at the Lawrence County Jail died of apparent breathing difficulties late Thursday.

Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department Chief Deputy Terry Beecham reported Friday morning that Terry See, 47, of  203 High Avenue, Ethridge, had been incarcerated for approximately three months on a probation violation charge.

Beecham said that the See had been listed as a “medical patient,” suffering from respiratory problems since his incarceration began.

Corrections Officers reported they conducted a routine “walk through” at 6:18 p.m. Thursday, and that See complained of difficulty breathing and chest pains. They reported that his breathing did appear labored. They contacted the Jail Nurse who ordered that he undergo a breathing treatment. She indicated he should have another treatment at 10:00 p.m., or before if needed.

Beecham said that See brought to the front office area at 7:23 p.m. for an additional treatment, then returned to his cell. Documentation shows that Corrections Officers checked on See again at 8:45 p.m., but that he did not appear to be any better. They again contacted the Jail Nurse, who in turn called a physician. The doctor advised them to transport him to Crockett Hospital.

Beecham stated that Corrections Officers were making arrangements for transport, and when they returned to the cell at 9:04 p.m., See was not breathing. Emergency Medical Technicians with the Lawrence County Ambulance Service arrived on the scene and he was quickly transported to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
