Investigation Underway Into Shots Fired

Agents with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were combing a wooded area off West Road (off Old Florence Road) Thursday afternoon, attempting to determine whether someone was firing rounds at drug agents working in the vicinity.

Although the two drug agents had initially believed someone had fired upon them, Chief Deputy Terry Beecham later explained that the situation was unclear.

Drug agents had been in the area conducting an investigation into possible drug activity. Shortly before 4:00 p.m., Beecham said, agents heard a shot being fired and felt that a round had traveled between them. Backup was summoned to the area and a search initiated.

The property, Beecham pointed out, backs up to the local FOP firing range. At the time the shot was fired, an investigator with the sheriff’s department was utilizing the range to sight in a rifle.

Beecham said that agents were continuing to comb the woods, as well as search the ground for the round that might have passed between the agents. “So far,” Beecham explained, “We haven’t found anything that indicates a threat.” The investigation, however, was continuing Thursday evening.
