Officer Intervenes In Puppy Dragging Incident

A Lawrenceburg Police Officer on patrol intervened Sunday when he found a Fourth Street resident dragging a small puppy up and down a street.

The officer reports that he was traveling north on North Military Avenue around 5:00 p.m. when he noticed the man was pulling something behind him as he walked along the street. When he stopped, the officer indicates he realized the object was a small puppy, bleeding from the paws.

The officer quickly confronted the man and found that there were bloody drag marks along the side of the street. Witnesses reported they had first noticed the man dragging the puppy north. Shortly thereafter, they reported he turned and dragged the pup back in a southern direction. One witness stated that it “looked like the puppy was dead” and that the man was walking at a fast pace while the pup rolled back and forth from its belly to its back.

The man, Joey Edward Davidson, 50, of 108 Fourth Street, was placed under arrest on charges of aggravated cruelty to animals and was transported to the Lawrence County Jail without further incident. He is scheduled for an initial appearance in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on May 7, 2009.

Officials indicate the mixed-breed puppy was transported to the Lawrenceburg Dog Pound where it has been given medical attention. They indicate that several individuals have already stepped forward, requesting they be allowed to adopt the puppy.
