Lawrenceburg Woman Charged With Abandoning Baby

Charges were issued against a young Lawrenceburg woman this week after she allegedly abandoned her baby inside a cabin in northern Giles County.

According to information released through the Giles County Sheriff’s Department the incident occurred in the early hours Wednesday at Wheeling in the Country, situated along the Lawrence/Giles County Line.

Authorities allege that Brooke Buchanan, age 21, of Lawrenceburg, came to the property owned by her father, in order to leave her vehicle for repairs. While there, she asked that her father allow she and her nine-month-old son to wait inside a rental cabin on the property until her mother arrived to pick them up. Shortly afterwards a witness reported seeing Buchanan in a vehicle traveling toward trails on the property; an area she had been warned not to enter. At that time Lawrence County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to investigate the trespassing matter.

A property owner began to check the cabin when he noticed a light had been left on. He discovered that Buchanan had left her baby unattended inside. Officials report the baby was sitting in the floor, strapped into his car seat, and that the air conditioner had been turned on.

Deputies report they spoke with Buchanan by telephone, and that she stated she “was not coming back at that time.” She told deputies that she was in Lawrence County, then later in Lewis County.

Warrants were issued through Giles County, charging Buchanan with the crime of aggravated child neglect. Authorities indicate she will also face charges of criminal trespassing through Lawrence County.

Officials request that anyone who knows the whereabouts of Buchanan contact the Giles County Sheriff’s Department at 931-363-2460 or the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department at 762-3626.
