Youth In Custody For Killing Father

A West Lawrence teen was taken into custody Friday evening on charges that he allegedly shot and killed his father during a domestic altercation at their home.

According to Lawrence County Sheriff Kenny Taylor, units with his department received the callout to the 165 Piney Road home at 6:28 p.m. Resident Thomas “Tommy” Schankweiler, Jr., age 37, he reports, died as a result of a single gunshot wound.

Taylor indicated that Shchankweiler and his seventeen-year-old son had been involved in a domestic altercation throughout the day, likely leading up to the shooting.

Taylor said that there were conflicting claims among the family members regarding who pulled the trigger, but that “we feel we have the right suspect in custody.” Taylor indicated that the youth did offer a confession.

Following the shooting, the teen and other family members made their way to a neighbor’s home, where the 911 call was placed.

Investigation into the situation is on-going through the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
