Arrestee Threatens Deputy, Slips Out Of Handcuffs

A Lawrenceburg man was jailed last week after he reportedly made threats toward a deputy and managed to slip out of his handcuffs.

The call sent Lawrenceburg Police Officers to Quick Stop, 1602 North Locust Avenue, around 8:00 a.m. Thursday. When they arrived, deputies report finding Jearald Wayne Bergin, 19, of 405 Oak Street, sitting inside his vehicle, eating a breakfast biscuit.

Reports show that he appeared to be under the influence of an intoxicant at the time.

Bergin reportedly told officers he had “had been up all night driving from Columbia to Lawrenceburg on the interstate and it took twelve hours.”

Officers indicate Bergin was handcuffed after making threats to “make a disturbance.” Liquor was reportedly confiscated from inside the vehicle. Bergin was transported to Crockett Hospital for a blood alcohol test. While en route to the Lawrence County Detention Center, however, officers report he became angry, saying that he had done nothing wrong.

During the ride Bergin allegedly told the reporting officer that he “would see what happens if I ever stopped him after he got out of jail.”

At the jail officers exited the vehicle and soon noticed that Bergin was moving about excessively in the back seat. They found that he had slipped the handcuffs off his right hand. They report he was removed from the vehicle and began swinging his arms about, resisting arrest. He then grabbed onto the door frame to further resist.

At that point Bergin was booked on charges of first offense DUI and resisting arrest, without further incident. He is scheduled to answer the charges in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on April 7, 2011.
