Proposed Tennessee Bill to prohibit smoking near or at playgrounds.

Communities across the region are looking to opt into a bill that will prohibit people from smoking near, or at, playgrounds. The bill is currently making its way through committees in the Tennessee legislature.

As currently written, the bill authorizes Knox County and Knoxville to prohibit smoking on the grounds of any playground owned by a local government. This is an "opt-in" bill where other cities can request to join.

Carter, Johnson, Washington, and Sullivan counties have requested local leaders to join the bill and that list is expected to grow.
Carter County Drug Prevention Coalition Director Jilian Reece called the bill necessary, saying its goal is "not" to take freedoms away from people.

Carter County is expected to vote on a resolution to "opt-in" the bill during this month's commission meeting.
