Sheriff Brown Announces Re-Election Bid

Press release

Lawrence County Sheriff Jimmy Brown looks forward to the future as he announces his candidacy for the Office of Sheriff in the May 6th Democratic Primary.

Brown was elected Sheriff of Lawrence County in August of 2010. Since taking office, he has worked with the members of his department, county officials and the general public to make many important improvements within the Sheriff’s Office.

Brown cites an increased effort in solving crimes in Lawrence County, with 2012 statistics from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations reflecting an 8% increase in cases cleared by arrest, as well a 9% increase in Domestic Violence cases cleared by arrest.

During his tenure as sheriff, the jail inmate population has more than doubled. In September 2010 the jail averaged 95 inmates per day at present the daily average is over 230 inmates per day. The department has searched for innovative ways to offset these cost. Noting that over the past two years, an excess of $2 million dollars has been returned to the County General Fund for housing state inmates.

He is currently working with the school board and county commission on a project that will add additional School Resource Officers in an effort to keep our schools safe for our children.

He and his wife, Phyllis, have been married for 48 years, and they have two children, Chris Brown and Meredith (Jerry) Scroggins, and they have three grandchildren. They live in the Leoma community and are active members of the Leoma Baptist Church. Sheriff Brown is also a member of the Loretto American Legion and Loretto Masons Lodge #655.

In announcing his bid for re-election Brown released the following statement:

“It has been a great honor to serve as your Sheriff for the past four years. I feel that our department has made progress on fighting crime in Lawrence County. Arrests are up, more cases are being solved and prosecuted and proactive policies are in place to help deter future crime.

The Office of Sheriff is an important position in our county. It is key that we elect someone who has the experience, vision and character to run this office. I feel my background makes me the best person suited for the job, and I would like to have the opportunity to build on the progress we have made during the past four years. I humbly ask for your vote and support on May 6th in the Democrat Primary election”
