Unemployment Check Amounts Could Decrease

Courtesy: WSMV-TV

Tennesseans receiving unemployment could soon start seeing less in their weekly checks.

House Speaker Kent Williams is suggesting cutting weekly benefits to keep the state's unemployment compensation fund in the black.

Many small-business owners like the idea because they are already paying higher taxes to keep the fund afloat. But that will make things much harder for those who are jobless.

Their checks are only $275 a week, which is the fourth lowest rate in the nation. Since the recession, the state's unemployment fund has dwindled from nearly $700 million to $100 million.
