The 2019 Lawrence County Chick Chain program will start up again very soon for Lawrence County 4-H’ers who choose to participate in project.

Lawrence County’s Chick Chain project involves 4-H members putting up a deposit for their baby chicks from the 4-H office.  Their 25, two day old chicks will usually arrive the last full week in April.  The 4-H member is to provide housing, brooding equipment, feeders, waterers and feed.

Once the hens reach just about laying age in late September, 4-H’ers may participate in the Lawrence County 4-H Poultry show that is held in conjunction with the Middle Tennessee District Fair.  The 4-H member will select their best six birds and they are judged as a pen.  Ribbons and prize monies will be awarded to the best entries.

Concluding the show we will hold an auction, if the 4-Her auctions off his/her birds then their deposit will be returned, and the 4-H’er will keep the remaining 19 birds.
Orders for this year’s Chick Chain will take place on February 12 at 6:00 p.m. at the Lawrence County UT/TSU Extension office.

If you have any questions or need more information, please call the office at 762-5506.
