December Unemployment Rate Creeps Upward

   Lawrence County’s unemployment rate for the month of December experienced an increase over the previous month.

   The Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development issued a press release last week, indicating that the state unemployment rate increased to 5.3% over November’s average of 4.7%.

   Throughout the state, officials report that ten counties experienced decreases in unemployment rates, 76 counties experienced increases, while nine counties remained constant.

   The lowest unemployment rate was reported in Williamson County at 3.6%, while the highest was experienced in Pickett County, with 9.9 %.

   Lawrence County’s unemployment rate came in at 8.7%, up from 8.3% in November. Neighboring Maury County’s rate dropped from 8.7% to 8.6%; Wayne County saw a significant increase from 7.4% in November to 8.1%, while Giles’ rate increased from 6.4% to 6.6%.
