Irate Individual Ousted During Elementary Basketball Game

An individual who apparently became irate during an elementary basketball game during the weekend was ousted, with some difficulty, by police officers called to the scene.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that deputies responded to a fight in progress call to Leoma Elementary School at 2612 Highway 43 South, Leoma, around 6:40 p.m. Thursday. The dispute had apparently broke out during the Leoma Elementary/Wayne County girls’ game.

When they arrived at the scene deputies learned that a forty-four-year-old Waynesboro man had become irate and was subsequently ejected from the game by the referee. The man reportedly refused to leave, instead becoming more “belligerent.”

When they entered the gymnasium and asked the man to leave without causing any further problems, deputies report the man “made an aggressive move toward a deputy.” The man was subsequently removed from the gym. While deputies were removing the man, assisted by Waynesboro Police Officers, they report that a male relative “joined in the altercation.”

Once outside, deputies report the man initially involved continued to be argumentative. They asked that he go to his vehicle or to another location inside the school, but not return to the gym. They report he eventually calmed down and left the gym area.

Deputies report they remained on the scene for the remainder of the game to ensure there were no further altercations.
