Young Teen Assaulted On Church Grounds

An investigation geared toward identifying the individual who attacked a young teenager on church grounds late last week has been turned over to detectives.

The matter came to light around 8:30 p.m. Friday when deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were dispatched to the emergency room at Crockett Hospital regarding an assault incident.

Deputies report speaking with the victim, age 13, and her mother. The young teen told deputies she and some friends had been at Cedar Springs Church on Waterloo Road earlier in the evening when she was assaulted.

She said that a young man who was standing near her suddenly struck her twice in the nose unprompted. She said that the young man then struck her in the right collarbone/shoulder area. The victim said she was knocked to the ground and while she was lying there, her attacker “landed on her with his elbow.”

The mother told deputies she had been unaware of the matter until her daughter began to complain of pain to the arm, back and collarbone. When the girl told her mother what had happened, the mom said she brought her in for medical attention.

The victim was unable to give much information about her attacker. She was able, however, to provide a name and an approximate age of 19.

Reports show that a suspect has been identified in the case and that investigation is on-going. Officials say warrants may soon be issued.
