Meth Lab Dismantled On Durham Circle In Summertown

A tip lead law enforcement officials to a Summertown home Tuesday where they were able to seize components to yet another meth lab.

According to reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, agents made their way to the 21 Durham Circle home armed with the information, as well as four arrest warrants issued through neighboring Maury County. The warrants had been issued against a man at the address.

When they arrived, deputies report finding resident Barry Lynn LaRue, 49, sitting in a chair in the yard, stripping wire. At that time, agents report a second man exited the home with a spotlight “looking around as if he were paranoid.”

LaRue identified the other man as Freeman Treat, age 27, of 8799 Brown Workman Lane, Mount Pleasant; the man against whom the Maury County warrants had been issued. Deputies then placed Treat under arrest on the outstanding warrants without incident.

While conducting a routine search of Treat’s person subsequent to arrest, agents report finding a “tooter” (device used to snort or smoke drugs) along with three grams of marijuana. Agents explained they had information regarding drug activity at the residence and were granted permission to conduct a search.

While searching the home, agents report finding numerous components commonly associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine. DEA was notified of the situation and a Hazardous Materials team dispatched to assist in cleanup and disposal of hazardous materials.

Also seized during the search were several weapons. They report that LaRue admitted he was a convicted felon and not allowed to own firearms, however he told deputies he “didn’t have anywhere else to keep his guns.”

As a result of the investigation Larue was placed under arrest on charges of being a convicted felon being in possession of firearms, possession of drug paraphernalia and promotion of the manufacture of meth.

Treat was arrested on charges of simple possession of marijuana and promotion of the manufacture of meth. He was also served the Maury County warrants, charging him with the crimes of probation revocation, domestic assault, possession of drug paraphernalia and simple possession of Schedule IV narcotics.

Both Treat and LaRue are slated to answer the charges against them through Lawrence County General Sessions Court on February 15, 2010.
