Arrest Made In Wednesday Domestic Assault

Law enforcement officials arrested a local man overnight Wednesday who had reportedly assaulted his girlfriend, then fled from police officers.

Johnny Jefferson Clifton, age 34, was arrested early Thursday morning on charges of domestic assault involving a viable fetus.

The victim, age 33, called deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department to a home on Clifton Road at around 7:30 p.m. She reported that she and Clifton had become involved in an argument that escalated to a physical assault.

The victim told deputies that during the altercation Clifton grabbed her by the upper arms and slammed her onto the floor.

When she got up, she said he pushed her again. She then ran outside to get into her vehicle, however she said Clifton took her keys and slammed her head against the seat.

The victim reported that Clifton was apologizing and begging her not to leave when deputies pulled up to the residence. When he saw the deputies he fled into the woods.

Deputies noted that the victim had sustained bruises during the altercation. They obtained warrants against Clifton and were able to apprehend him early Thursday morning at a home on Knob Creek Road.
