Identity Thieves Target Leoma Resident

   Identity thieves continue to be on the prowl, and some recently targeted a resident of Prokesh Road in Leoma.

   The victim, age 42, filed a complaint with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department on Tuesday. He indicated that someone had opened at least two VISA accounts in his name, without his knowledge.

   The victim reported he received notification that he was being sued by VISA regarding two accounts in his name, with a combined balance of some $1,700. The accounts were payable to an address in Indian Trail, North Carolina.

   The victim indicated that the accounts had been opened in October of 2005, while he was residing in North Carolina. He stated that he had moved to Lawrence County after he had become separated from his wife.

   Deputies advised the victim to file a second complaint with authorities in North Carolina.        

   The matter remains under investigation at this time.
