Fugitives Of Justice Apprehended At Local Motel

Individuals wanted on warrants out of Marshall, Wayne and Perry Counties were apprehended inside a local motel room last week, with a child in their midst.

Lawrenceburg Police Chief Terry Shay reported Thursday that the operation was jointly undertaken through his department and the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department, after they received a tip indicating that a fugitive was staying at David Crockett Motel, 503 East Gaines Street.

When they made their way to the motel room in question, Shay reports that the suspect, Tandelyn Hickman, 41, was inside, along with a number of other individuals. They report that Hickman, who was wanted in Marshall County, was found hiding behind a bathroom door.

One male subject identified himself as “Steven Pulley.” Shortly, officers discovered that the man had given a false ID. He was, in fact, Bobby Joe Smotherman, 40, who was wanted in both Wayne and Perry Counties.

Shay reports that officers seized numerous items of contraband from inside the motel room, including methamphetamine, marijuana, and various items of drug paraphernalia. Also seized were items believed to be related to forgery charges pending against Hickman.

Hickman was arrested on charges that include possession of a Schedule II controlled substance (meth) and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Smotherman was placed under arrest on charges of criminal impersonation “for lying about his identity and assuming another’s identity in order to avoid arrest for the active warrants on file against him.”

A third person, Cora Pulley, 33, was placed under arrest on charges of possession of meth and possession of drug paraphernalia.

All were transported to the Lawrence County Jail where they were processed and booked. Shay points out, “Smotherman and Hickman will face their charges in Lawrence County before being released to the other counties where they are wanted.”

In addition, Shay reports that a minor child was found inside the room. The child, he indicates, was released into the custody of officials with the Department of Children Services.
