Daniel Rodgers, Sports

In what felt like a home game for Lawrence County, the Lady Cats took on Columbia Central Tuesday night in Columbia.

Columbia came in on an eight game winning streak and a #4 ranking in the state. Lawrence County wanted to end that streak but would need some big play to do so.

got the ball first and ran out to an early lead, with strong inside presence by former Lady Cat standouts Keiana and Aryanna Gilbert. After creating eight turnovers, the Lady Lions were up 21-11.

half with 14 points. At the end of the first half, the Lady Cats were in a big hole, down 43-20.

The third quarter produced much of the same as the first two, with the Gilbert sisters leading the charge.

LCHS played more aggressively, beginning to turn down three point shots for drives, while forcing six turnovers of their own.

Columbia was still able to score however, doubling up LCHS in the third to go to the final period with a 65-31 lead.

With bench players subbing in for much of the fourth period the clock finally hit 00, giving Columbia a 70-32 victory.

The young Lady Cats showed a lot of growth in the loss, going to the basket with a purpose that hasn’t been seen this season. LCHS was led by senior, Abby Clayton with 14 points.

They will take on arch rival Shelbyville Friday night in Shelbyville, looking to turn this season around. Columbia will play Friday night at Franklin County in district play.
