Man Drives Away With Gas But Leaves ID

A man who asked to have the pump turned on at an Ethridge market so he could fill his gas tank Wednesday reportedly made off with out paying, but left his ID behind.

Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department were summoned to Rick’s Country Store, 3799 Highway 43 North, Ethridge, shortly before 7:00 a.m. Wednesday.

The clerk reported that a man bearing a Tennessee-issued identification card had entered the store shortly before. He requested that the clerk turn on pump number 5 so he could fill his gas tank.

He handed the clerk his ID card, indicating that he would retrieve it when he came in to pay for the gas.

After filling the tank with $45.01 worth of gasoline, however, the clerk reports that the man got back into his vehicle and drove away without paying.

The ID card identified the man as a forty-year-old resident of Crawley Hill Road in Mount Pleasant.

Investigation into the theft is currently being continued by detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
