The couple raised five children, four of whom are living. The family includes: Reenie Paley Marshall, husband Sam (deceased) and sons Chris and Alex and wife Magdalena; Raymond Brien Paley, wife Wanda and daughters Danielle, her husband Read Talley, and Kelly; David Edmund Paley, wife Sheila and children Cassie, Laura and her husband Alan Hardy, Leanna, Chris and wife Jennifer; John Martin Paley (deceased), his daughters Star and Ann, and their mother, Beverly Philpot; Mark Andrew Paley and sons Drew and Jackson. Ed was blessed with 10 great grandchildren.
Ed was born in Cleveland, Ohio. His parents were Alice Bowles and Fred Paley, both born in Scarborough England and raised in Aberdeen Scotland. His parents immigrated to Cleveland in 1921 where he grew up with his two sisters and three brothers.
As a child Ed would put together bicycles from parts he found at the junkyard. He invited other kids to ride the bikes around the block-for a small fee. He continued bicycle building when he began work for Murray Ohio right out of high school. Forty-four years later he retired from Murray in 1984. As Eddie said, “I was out the door in ’84.” He had enjoyed a 34-year retirement when he passed away.
The Paley family moved to Lawrenceburg in 1956. The town became and remains their beloved home. As a community volunteer Eddie served First United Methodist Church as Sunday School Superintendent and on the Finance Committee and was also President of the Lawrence County High School Band Boosters.
Ed was an avid golfer. He played in the Murray golf league, in Lawrenceburg Country Club tournaments and many times a week with friends. He also enjoyed competing in the Murray Ohio bowling league. In later years Mr. Paley traveled with his wife and children. Destinations included Hawaii, Columbus and Cleveland, Ohio, Atlanta, Memphis, Toronto, Denver, South Carolina, California, Florida and Richmond.
Continuing his lifelong enjoyment of dance, Ed especially loved dancing with his wife at the Loretto Senior Center and at every other opportunity, from festivals to weddings to birthday and anniversary parties. After dancing the waltz and polka at an Oktoberfest in Virginia, perfect strangers gathered around the couple to ask about and compliment their graceful performance.
