Calving enjoyed boating and water skiing on the Tennessee River in Alabama. He served is country as a member of the United States Navy. He was a thoughtful man and had a great sense of humor. Omie Lura Smith White, passed away at home in Lawrence County, Tennessee on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at the age of 87. Omie was born in Lee County, Arkansas during a brief family trip for work, but soon returned to Lawrence County, TN., where she lived until graduation from Lawrence County High School in 1949. Omie then went on to business college in Nashville, TN., where she met Wilbur White, her husband of over 65 years. During her children's formative years she was very active in the Cub Scouts and boy Scouts of America in Nashville, TN., Milwaukee, WI and Acworth, GA. She also worked in Civil Service for 13 years during this period and later, was a tax consultant, teacher and office manager for H&R Block in Panama City, FL., and Lawrenceburg, TN. Upon her husband's retirement they bought an RV and traveled extensively visiting family and friends and were also active in the local chapter of the Good Sam RV Club.

Larry D Kimbrell, age 68 of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee passed away Sunday, March 19, 2017 at his residence. He was a native of Buckhannon, WV., retired from CCA Prison, a member of the VFW Post 1618 and Loretto Masonic Lodge No. 655. Mr. Kimbrell served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era in the 25th Infantry Division. He was awarded a Silver Star and two Purple Hearts.

Elmer Helton

Elmer “Gene” Helton, 87, of Old Hickory, TN died March 13, 2017. He was the loving husband of Betty Ann Belew Helton.

He spent over 20 years in the Air Force with tours in Turkey, Japan, Phillipines, and Vietnam, retiring in 1967. After the military, Gene attended David Lipscomb College receiving his undergraduate degree and George Peabody College for a Master's degree. He taught middle school in Nashville public schools for over 20 years. He loved his family and his Lord. He was a member of Old Hickory Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Betty Belew Helton. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his wife, Sara Ladd Helton and his seven children: Regina Rucker, Gerald Helton, Faye Hazelbaker, Donald Helton, Paul Helton, David Helton, and Bobby Helton. He is also survived by 23 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 step-grandchildren; and 3 step-great-grandchildren.

Longtime member of Craft United Methodist Church, Civitan Club and Honorary Member of Woodmen of the World. Even though Jean was in a wheelchair most of her life she graduated from Giles County High School in 1953, attending Columbia Business College a few years later.

She was able to work at City Hall doint vacation relief and extra typing. She also did answering service for IBM and was a secretary at Barnes Heating Service. Jean advanced from cashier at the Goodwill Store to Assistant Manager and then became a receptionist with Advanced Medical Supply.

Jean will be remembered for feeding the birds, stray cats and dogs. She had many special friends whom she loved and was loved in return: Robin Johnson and family, Bill and Jodi Woods, Mildred Carroll, Bobby and Edith Stephenson, Lorraine Paul, Frank Jones, Jane and Ed Griffis, Barbara Johnston, Barbara Frierson, Dwayne Clayton, Dot and George Horne and Mike and Amanda Simmons just to name a few.

Timothy Joseph Nolan

The soul of Timothy Joseph Nolan set sail for a heavenly port on March 10, 2017. He passed away gently, surrounded by loving family and friends at Alive Hospice in Nashville, TN. He was 55 years old.

Tim began his earthly voyage on October 7, 1961 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is survived by his wife, Dana Edward Nolan, whom he married on the 4th of July in 1998. He is also survived by two daughters, Sarah and Hannah Nolan, and three step-sons, Daniel (Jennifer) Simpkins, Samuel (Mary) Simpkins, and Micah Simpkins, all of Shelbyville, TN.

He is also survived by his parents, William B. and Virginia Nolan of Flanders, New Jersey; five brothers, Paul (Kim) Nolan of Stacy MN, John (Anne) Nolan of Edina, MN, Patrick (Lisa) Nolan of Flanders, NJ, Kevin (Jennifer) Nolan of Rochester, MN, and William D. Nolan of Falls Church VA; one sister, Mary Nolan of Lebanon, NJ; thirteen nieces and nephews.

A proud veteran of the United States Navy, Tim served for six and a half years, spending four of those years on the USS Berkeley (DDG-15) working in Advanced Electronics. This training led him to take an interest in newly emerging field of Information Security. He served as the first Information Security Officer for Bridgestone Americas Holding. He excelled in his chosen field for over twenty years and was employed with Dun and Bradstreet at the time of his death.

Tim's priorities in life, however, centered around his faith. He was a member of the Cason Lane Church of Christ in Murfreesboro, TN. Many noted that he had the heart of King David, the zeal of Phinehas, and the steadfastness of Job. He enjoyed discussing Bible topics, studying with friends and family, and singing praises to God! One never had to wonder where Tim stood on a matter, as his moral compass firmly pointed toward heaven.

Tim's belief that a sailor was always safest in the top rack led him to continually reach higher and higher for greater achievement with true integrity, and in love for God and his fellow man. He was a master teacher in his areas of expertise, and he delighted in mentoring young people. His entrepreneurial spirit and passion for excellence was infectious. His battle cry was "Beat Army!"

There will be a visitation on Saturday, March 18, from 11:00 a.m. until time of the service at Neal Funeral Home in Lawrenceburg, TN. The family would be honored if guests wore something blue in Tim's memory. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. in the funeral home chapel, with Drew Edwards and Daniel Edwards officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Mimosa Cemetery in Lawrenceburg, TN following the service.

Althward Taylor (A.T.) Austin, 90, of Killen, AL passed away March 13, 2017. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Killen and a retired painter at TVA. He was also a member of Killen Lion’s Club, Killen Masonic Lodge, and Painter’s Union Local #1293.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Lillian B. Austin; parents, Alfred and Lillie Parker Austin; sisters, Rose Scott, Elzura Fulmer, and Cynthi Mansell.

He is survived by sons, Lyndon Wayne Austin (Janet) of Alexander City, AL and Tim Austin; daughter, Sherry Baker (Charlie) of Killen; five grandchildren’ eleven great-grandchildren.

Steve Mayfield

A super hero entered into Heaven yesterday, Monday, March 13, 2017.

Steve Mayfield passed away peacefully with his adoring wife of nearly 32 years at his side in their home, after a brave and long-fought battle with ALS. He was 55 years old.

Steve was born January 24, 1962, the son of Bud and Deanna Mayfield in Decatur, AL. He completed high school at Cullman, where he was a superstar basketball athlete and High School All-American. He still holds the record for scoring the most points in a game in Cullman, 44 points, before the 3-point shot had begun. He played basketball at Sneed State College before transferring to UNA in Florence, AL. Steve was truly one of those people who excelled at everything he ever did. He graduated from UNA with a bachelor’s degree in Physical Education, Health and History. It was right before graduation from college that he met the love of his life, Amy Brewer Mayfield. They married right after he graduated from UNA and she had graduated from high school, barely 18. Together, they began their life, moving to Georgia for three years where Steve would begin his long coaching and teaching career. This is where Steve’s legacy began for influencing students for many years to come.

In 1988, Steve and Amy moved back to Florence when Steve became the head basketball and assistant football coach at Waterloo High School. He coached there for many years, making many wonderful memories with fantastic people.

In 1993, Steve moved to teach and coach at Central High School in Florence, where he stayed until his retirement after almost 30 years of a career in teaching and coaching. He coached basketball, football, golf, while there. He truly loved his students, his players, and his fellow teachers. The Central community has loved Steve as their own, and he loved them. Some of his beast friends have come from his association with Central and he treasured them all.

His greatest joys were always his wife, Amy, and two sons, Garrett Mayfield and Brooks Mayfield. He coached and guided them, loved them fiercely, and sacrificed for them, doing everything that he could to give them every opportunity, need, and want in this world. He was so proud of the golfing ability of his son, Garrett, and the fact that he was able to coach him to a full golf scholarship and go on to see him become a PGA teaching professional. He was so proud of the writing ability and dedication of Brooks, who took on championing the cause of trying to encourage the FDA to pass a medicine quickly for patients with ALS, even traveling to Washington, DC to meet with Senators and Congressmen to beg for their help in speeding up the approval process in the hope that Steve could stay longer on this Earth.

Steve was truly an angel on Earth with the true spirit of Jesus. He gave to anyone who needed. He did not judge. He only loved and helped. Many times he provided students with new school clothes, Christmas gifts, trips, and no one ever knew. He took in on several occasions Amy’s family members at various trials in their life and never batted an eye to provide for their every need. He literally would open his home, his heart, and his resources to anyone who needed them.

He had a huge support group of coaching, golfing, and old buddies who fought with him to the very end. He loved them like brothers and they made sure they were always there for him. For them and their support and love of Steve, the family is eternally grateful.

Throughout his illness, Steve remained calm and assured his friends and family that he was never afraid. He knew he was going to be a winner either way; either healed on Earth and allowed to stay here longer, or healed in Heaven where we will be reunited for eternity.

He was preceded in death by his wonderful father, Rev. Bud Mayfield and his grandparents Roy and Birtie Howell and Johnnie and Hazel Mayfield, and his adoring mother and father-in-law, A.M. and Ann Brewer.

He leaves to his precious memory his wife Amy Brewer Mayfield; sons, Garrett Mayfield and Brooks Mayfield; his beloved mother, Deanna Mayfield; his precious niece, Mollie Mayfield and sister-in-law, Emily Mayfield who he has helped to raise as his own, seeing that she was only eight when he and Amy married; his adoring brothers, Mark Mayfield (Cindy), Brad Mayfield, and Lynne Mayfield Morris (Jeff); a host of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews whom he loved dearly; his precious golfing/coaching buddies and old friends; and his special cousins who never left his side in his last two days of life as we tried to care for and comfort him, Barbara Cole and Kendra Sandlin. He also loved his English Bulldog, Pebbles, although he would never admit it.

The celebration and home-going service for Steve will be Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at Lone Cedar Church of Christ. Address for GPS is 10160 County Rd. 47, Florence, AL 35634. Visitation will begin at 10:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. with the service to follow immediately. Officiating will be Bro. Tim Grigsby and Steve’s brother, Pastor Mark Mayfield. A private graveside service will be held.

Pall bearers will be David Corl, Jerry Fulmer, Mike Stamps, Todd Nelms, Jay Hendricks, Mark Butler, and Duane Keener. Honorary pall bearers will be lifelong friend David Smith, Heath Wood, Earl Moore, Doug Trousdale, and a host of former golf and coaching buddies.

Marion Lewis Nash, age 89, of Lawrenceburg, TN passed away Sunday, March 12, 2017 at his residence. He was a native of Lawrence County, TN, a farmer, served as a mechanic for Lloyd Carroll Motors, a mechanic and driver for Oren Hood, and retired from the Lawrence County Road Department. He was a member of Crossroads Freewill Baptist Church, and a fifty-year member of Masonic Lodge #542 where he was a 16th Degree Mason.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lewis and Bertie Griggs Nash; two brothers, Warner Nash and Finis Nash; one grandson, Stacy Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Annabell Smith.

Rudie Jeane Ellingson Hood, age 88 of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee passed away Friday, March 3, 2017 with family by her side. She was a native of Lawrence County, TN. She grew up on a farm on Long Branch and graduated from Lawrence County High School in 1947. Rudie Jeane attended Martin College in Pulaski, TN., and moved to Nashville where she lived from 1948-2002 and was a member of the Hillsboro Church of Christ. She then moved to Lawrenceburg where she lived near family for the rrest of life. Rudie Jeane was a licensed cosmetologist and later worked for Bellsouth, where she retired with 25 years service and was a homemaker. She was a member of Pulaski Street Church of Christ, a lifetime member of the Telephone Pioneers and teh Lawrence County Senior Citizens where she enjoyed bingo.

She was deeply devoted to her family, loved animals and flowers, reading and to travel. She was especially prooud of her Norwegian heritage and traveled to Scandinavia and took a cruise of the Norwegian coastline. She traveled many places with three girlfriends as far as Quebec, Canada. She also took many trips to visit family including Puerto Rico, Key West, New York and serveral trips to California. Her favorite two names were "Granmomma" and "GeeGee".

Her parents were Rudolph Benjamin and Viola Willingham Ellingson. She was preceded in death by husband, Marlin C. Hood; daughter, Linda Hood Denney; and son in law, Clif Denney.

Charles William Thigpen, age 75 of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017 at his residence under the care of Unity Hospice. He was a native of Lauderdale County, AL., retired Purchasing Manager from Hughes Parker, and Entreprreneur, Teacher and General Contractor. He was a member of the Lawrenceburg Quarterback Club, Lawrence County Classics Car Club, and Ethridge Church of Christ. He was active in mission work in India, Africa and Vietnam for 35 years. Mr. Thigpen served his country honorably in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam Era.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Wilson Porter and Mary Odelle Thornton Thigpen.

Lula Vernell Bosheers Simbeck Johnson, resident of Loretto, Tennessee, died on Monday, February 20, 2017 at the age of 82.

Vernell was born August 5, 1934 to Wilburn and Grracie Wilson Bosheers. She was united in marriage to Royce Simbeck on January 30, 1952. She and rooyce had 4 children. Her 2nd marriage was to Lonnie Johnson and together they had 1 child and 4 step-children.

Shirley Ann Olive

Shirley Ann Olive, age 76, of Greenhill, AL passed away Monday, February 20, 2017 at Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home.

She was born on of nine children in Wayne County, TN to Hershel & Corene Olive. She was stricken with polio at the young age of 10. Doctors gave no hope that she would ever walk or talk again, and told the family that she would not live more than two years. Although her mind remained forever a little girl and her body sustained partial paralysis, she defied all odds. Thanks to much prayer and the nurturing and determination of her mother, Grandmother, and aunts, Shirley was fitted with leg braces two years later and taught to walk and talk.

She remained very active throughout her life. She was best friend and playmate to her sisters, brothers, 28 nieces and nephews, and numerous great nieces and nephews. She loved outdoors, flowers, gardening, and apples. Her favorite things were make-up, fingernail polish and jewelry, especially beads.

She was a 21 year resident of Lauderdale Christian Nursing Home where she remained active. A huge thank you to all of the staff at Lauderdale Christian and especially to some special friends (you know how you are) for all that you have done to give her such a fulfilling life.

She was preceded in death by her parents: Herschel Sr. & Corene Olive; brother and sister-in-law Herschel Jr. and Betty Olive; sister and brother-in-law Jack & Francis Stutts; and sister Glenda Olive.

Janie B. McCrory, age 91, of Summertown, TN, passed away Sunday, February 19, 2017 at Maury Regional Medical Center in Columbia, TN. She was a native of Summertown and retired cafeteria manager at Summertown Elementary School.

Avaleen Perry Harwell died peacefully at her home in Lawrenceburg on Friday, February 17, 2017. She was 96 years old.

Mrs. Harwell (Muv as she was known to her grandchildren), was born January 26, 1921 in Rogersville, AL., to her parents, Morris Clinton Perry and Addie Velma Weathers Perry. She married the Honorable Judge William Alton (Bud) Harwell June 19, 1938.

She was a loving wife, mother, mother in law, grandmother and great grandmother as well as homemaker and owner of The Happy Cook, a gourmet cooking shop in Lawrenceburg. She was a faithful member of Coleman Memorial United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Harwell was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and husband.

Minnie Lee Dye

Minnie Lee Dye, age 101, a life long resident of Lawrence County living in Bonnertown passed away Friday, February 17, 2017 at Southern TN Regional Health System in Lawrenceburg, TN. She was a native of Lauderdale County, AL., and graduated from Loretto High School and Middle Tennessee State University.

She was an educator in Lauderdale County, AL., and Lawrence County, TN., for 26 years before her retirement. She was a dedicated Christian and the oldest member of Bonnertown Baptist Church where she taught Vacation Bible School and Sunday School most of her life. For over 25 years, she was the tour director for the Lawrence County Travel Club traveling in 48 states including Hawaii and Alaska.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. William Andrew "Preacher" Fowler, Sr. and Mettie Jane Davis Fowler; her first husband, Hugh Hammond, who died in World War II; her second husband, Felton Dye, died in a car accident; and two brothers, Rev. W.A. "Bill" Fowler, Jr. and Miley D. Fowler.

Sue Edna Hill Allen, 81, of Florence, passed away Peacefully in her sleep on Tuesday, February 14, 2017 after bravely battling a prolonged illness.

Sue was born in 1935, where she spent her childhood in Lexington, AL. She fell in love with her future husband, Edwin Allen, at the age of 15. They married when she was 18 and lived the rest of their beautiful life together in Florence. She became a member of the Church of Christ when she was 18.

She will forever be remembered for the boundless love she had for her family, her legendary spaghetti and red velvet cake, her wonderful sense of humor and the sheer beauty and happiness she brought to everyone's life. She will be remembered daily, buty especially anytime there is a particularly stunning sunset.

Robert D. Belew, Sr., age 89 of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee passed away Saturday, February 4, 2017 at his residence. He was a native of Lawrence County, TN., and retired from the U.S. Army where he served his country honorably in WWII, Korean Conflict and Vietnam Era from March 28, 1945 until September 1, 1965. Mr. Belew retired as a Veteran Service Officer and County Trustee with Local Government in 1986 and served for nine years as Lawrence County Commissioner. He was a member and past Commander of L.O. Crane, The American Legion, lifetime member of VFW Post 1618, Past President of the Tennessee Veteran Service Officers Association, "Three War" Veterans of America, Under Age Veterans of America and Pulaski Street Church of Christ.

She was an excellent cook and loved the outdoors where she enjoyed fishing and riding the lawn mower.

Elizabeth Ann Smith Lanning, 81 of Lawrenceburg died peacefully at home Wednesday, January 11, 2017 surrounded by her loving family.

A native of Lawrence County, she was a devoted wife of fifty-eight years, mother, and friend to many throughout the community. Mrs. Lanning retired as a supervisor from Kay Windsor Manufacturing and was one of the founders of Rick's Barbecue and was instrumental in the day to day operations until her retirement. She was a member of the New Prospect United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, George Franklin Lanning, her parents, Jesse L. and Lillie G. Smith, brother, Gerald Coffee and Anita Coffee, sister in law.

Kathlyn Grisham Heffington, age 96 of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee passed away Sunday, January 8, 2017. She was a native of Lawrenceburg, TN., and a member of Pulaski Street Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Alexandeer Heffington, who died on February 15, 2005. She graduated as Salutatorian of her high school class, where she was a star basketball player, dramatic stage actress and acrobatic performer. She received her B.A. degree, Magnum Cum Laude from Athens College, her M.A. degree Cum Laude, from Middle Tennessee State University and was one of the first women to study Aerospace Science when she did doctoral work at the UT Space Institute.

She was a former educator. She also served on the board of Middle Tennessee Mortage Company and Key Life Insurance Company and founded with her husband Tan Oak Farms where they raised Champion Charolais cattle and Tennessee Walking horses. Mrs. Heffington was a member of the D.A.R. and Colonial Dames of America.

Jesse Leon LeMay, passed away Januar 6, 2017. He was born at Center Hill in Lauderdale County on April 2nd 1930.

Jesse, to his co-workers, Leon to family and "Molehead" to his childhood friends, Leon graduated from Lexington High School in 1950 and was voted Wittiest in his class. He worked as a Civil Engineer with the Federal Highway Administration beginnning in 1954 and retiring in 1986 with The U.S.Army Corps of Engineers. His last projects were the Divide Cut at Holcut, Mississippi and The Railroad Bridge on the Tennessee Tombigbee Waterway at Burnsville, MS. Leon was a member of Antioch Church of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Geraldine "Gerry" Blackburn LeMay and his parents, Johnnie Wilburn LeMay and Ester Hill LeMay.
