Scammers Seeking Access To Bank Accounts
A local woman wishes to inform the public about a new method being used by scammers who are seeking access to residents’ bank accounts.
The victim said Monday that she had received a postcard by mail, informing her that she was to receive a “reward.” The card, reading “Urgent Notice,” informed the woman that she was to receive a $100 “reward” that she would be able to use at Walmart or Target stores. It included a reference number and a telephone number to call in order to claim the reward.
The victim said that the card was completely blank on one side, but had her name and address on the other. It included a deadline and business hours during which she was instructed to call.
The victim said that she called the number and that the person with whom she spoke told her she would need to give them $1 from her bank account in order to claim her reward.
After speaking with the person, the victim placed a call to the Better Business Bureau to report the scam. She was instructed to report the matter to local law enforcement and court officials, as well. Anyone who receives a similar card is urged to do the same.
