Vehicle Burning In Field Yields Arrest
An investigation initiated when a man noticed a vehicle burning in his field yielded one arrest late Sunday.
Deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department made their way to a farm on Hollis Drive around 11:40 p.m. The property owner reported that he had been at his Flatwoods Road home when he noticed a large column of flames coming from one of his wheat fields. He said when he went to investigate he, “Saw a man who was highly intoxicated and was upset because his mother’s Jeep was burning.”
The property owner detained the man until deputies arrived on the scene. He was identified as thirty-two year old Jason Earl Clayton.
Deputies noted that Clayton did exhibit signs of being highly intoxicated. He told them that, “He was out with a friend who he could not name and had been drinking and next thing he knew they were outside watching the Jeep burn.” He was unable to give deputies any details about his evening.
Once the fire was extinguished deputies discovered the remains of a rifle that had been in the back seat.
Clayton was arrested on charges of public intoxication and unlawful possession of a firearm and transported for incarceration at the Lawrence County Detention Center without further incident.
