Shoplifting investigation leads to drug arrest
Lawrenceburg Now
An investigation into a shoplifting incident at a Lawrenceburg market resulted in drug charges being issued against one local woman.
Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an officer had been involved in an investigation regarding shoplifting at a local market early Tuesday. As a result, the officer conducted a traffic stop on a driver who was wanted for questioning.
The officer reports that he conducted the traffic stop on Fair Avenue just after midnight. He spoke with the driver, thirty-four year old Chasity Dawn Freemon, asking about the shoplifting incident. Freemon told him that she had given a friend a ride to the market, but had left once she realized that she was shoplifting.
When the officer asked for Freemon’s driver’s license she informed him that it had been suspended for failure to appear in court. At that point he asked for her insurance information. He reports that as Freemon pulled the paperwork from the glove compartment, he noticed a loaded syringe sticking out of the papers.
As a result, the officer conducted a search of the driver’s immediate area. He reports finding a bag that contained forty-nine Alprazolam pills that had been stuffed between the driver seat and console. He found a second syringe, a pipe, and a set of scales behind the driver’s seat.
When questioned about the contraband, reports show that Freemon explained that she was in the process of purchasing the vehicle, and that she had been driving it for approximately one week. She told the officer that the contraband did not belong to her, but that it might be the property of the friend involved in the shoplifting incident.
The substance in the syringe field tested positive for methamphetamine. Freemon was placed under arrest and transported to the Lawrence County Detention Center. She was incarcerated on charges of driving on a suspended license, possession of Schedule IV narcotics, possession of Schedule II narcotics, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
Freemon was incarcerated under a bond of $22,000. An initial appearance in General Sessions Court has been scheduled for February 2, 2017.
