Driver said he was texting at time of crash
Lawrenceburg Now
A driver who left the scene of an accident during the weekend later told officers that he had been texting at the time the crash occurred.
Officers with the Lawrenceburg Police Department were dispatched to the scene of the crash on May Street shortly before 7:30 Saturday morning. The resident and his visitor reported that they had been inside when they heard “something like thunder.” They went out to investigate and found that the visitor’s 2001 Chevrolet S-10 truck had sustained a significant amount of damage, as had the resident’s mailbox.
Officers report that a 1997 Chevrolet Camaro sitting about twenty-five yards away had also sustained damage. Neighbors reported looking out to see the male driver walking away, heading north on Smith Avenue.
Reports show that officers conducted a search of the area, but that they were unable to locate the driver. While searching the car, however, they found several prescription bottles bearing the name of David Allen Jacobs. They also report finding an open container of beer in the passenger floorboard that was still cold to the touch.
Officers ran the license plate and were able to identify the owner of the car. When they spoke with her she informed them that her son had actually been driving it. Soon, they made contact with Jacobs at his girlfriend’s apartment.
At that time, they report that he admitted he had been driving the vehicle. He told them that he had been texting at the time of the crash, which they were able to confirm on his phone. They report that he also admitted that he had been drinking the beer.
As a result of the investigation Jacobs, age 30, of 1160 Mattoxtown Road, was arrested on charges that include driving on a revoked license, leaving the scene of an accident, failure to exhibit due care, violation of the open container law, and texting while driving. He was booked into the Lawrence County Detention Center and incarcerated under a $2,000 bond.
Jacobs is scheduled for an initial appearance in Lawrence County General Sessions Court on February 2, 2018.
