Authorities looking into reports of fake checks
Lawrenceburg Now
Law enforcement officials are looking into reports from employees of a local check cashing/small loan business concerning fake checks made to look as if they were issued through legitimate businesses.
Reports filed through the Lawrenceburg Police Department show that an officer spoke with employees of Cash Express on North Locust Avenue on Friday. They reported that they had encountered two such incidents in a two-day period.
Employees reported that on Thursday a man had entered the business, seeking to cash a $2,500 check bearing the information of The First Bank. They said that it appeared that the check had been issued by “South Lands Realty Co.” of Linden, TN.
Employees reported that the man had attempted to use Social Security number that did not belong to him to cash the check, but that they had refused to cash it when it became apparent that the check was fraudulent. They told the officer that as he exited the business the man inadvertently dropped his driver’s license, allowing them to ascertain his true identity.
On Friday, employees said, a female subject entered the business, seeking to cash a similar fake check. They said the check bore the information of “Priority Express, Inc.” and appeared to have been issued on a check from Community Bank. They said that they declined to cash the check when the woman refused to provide any personal information.
A Cash Express employee reported to the officer that she had made contact with employees at both banks and learned that they were, in fact, legitimate accounts.
Both incidents currently remain under investigation.
