Resident Surprises Intruder, Halting Burglary
Law enforcement officials initiated an investigation Wednesday after a Mattoxtown Road resident surprised a man who had broken into her home and interrupting a burglary.
The thirty-eight year old victim told deputies with the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department that she had been at home alone when the incident occurred. She reported that she had been working briefly in a shop building just outside of her home, then went back inside.
She said that as she went to retrieve her phone from her bedroom her dog began to growl and “act weird.” She told officers that, “All of a sudden her son’s bedroom door few open at the end of the hallway and a white male…came running through her house,” and fled out the back door.
The victim told deputies that she had been unable to pursue the man and obtain a clear description because she was confined to a wheelchair.
Once the man left, the victim said she went into her son’s bedroom to try to figure out what he had been up to. She said that her son’s Vizzio brand big screen TV was lying across his bed. Also, she told deputies, a $100 bill that had been lying on the dresser beside his bed was missing.
A neighbor walked over to the residence to report that he had noticed a suspicious vehicle shortly before the incident occurred. He reported noticing a few hours before, a red minivan with two male occupants.
He said that the driver appeared to be in his 30s while the passenger was possibly in his 70s. He told deputies that the men had driven past the residence, then turned around and drove by it a second time.
Detectives with the department’s Criminal Investigation Division are continuing their investigation into the crime.
