Fraudulent Social Security Claim Filed Using Resident’s Identity
A local woman discovered last week that her identity had recently been used to file a fraudulent claim with the Social Security Administration (SSA).
On Wednesday the seventy-one year old victim requested that a complaint be filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department. She told deputies that she had received a letter from SSA indicating that her benefits would be changing.
The victim said she contacted SSA to inquire about the notification and learned that someone had used her identity “to file for $94,600 in income.” The victim told deputies that she had not filed a claim during the past ten years because both she and her husband had been receiving disability benefits. She said that SSA officials advised her to file a complaint with local authorities.
Investigation in the matter is on-going at the current time.
