Indiana Fugitive Apprehended After Slipping In Wet Grass While Fleeing From Deputies

A man wanted on a fugitive from justice warrant out of the state of Indiana was apprehended when he slipped in some wet grass while leading deputies on a foot chase Sunday.

Reports filed through the Lawrence County Sheriff’s Department show that thirty-year-old Daniel Floyd Cates was arrested at a Summertown home at around 2:15 Sunday afternoon.

Police officers from Mt. Pleasant requested assistance from local deputies while trying to locate Cates, who was wanted on a nation-wide warrant for a parole violation in Indiana. They reported that he might be a passenger in a gold color, four door Honda Civic with a female driver, and that he could be in the vicinity the Shell Station in Summertown. Deputies found no vehicle matching that description when they arrived and were subsequently directed to 197 Holloway Street.

Deputies reported spotting the car when they arrived, noting that the female driver was out of the vehicle. As they approached on foot, they said Cates got into the driver’s seat, started the vehicle, and attempted to flee across the yard. The car became stuck in the mud and he exited and began to flee on foot. He ran toward a nearby field, but slipped in the wet grass and fell.

Deputies caught up with him and report that Cates struggled with them in an attempt to avoid arrest, kicking and cursing, and then spat in their faces. While en route to the Lawrence County Detention Center, they report that he “began slamming his head against the cage in the patrol unit stating he was going to sue me for policeman brutality.”

Cates was booked under charges that include resisting arrest, evading arrest, and being a fugitive from justice. He was incarcerated to await transfer to Indiana.
